Portafilter Size Guide
Choosing the right size is what ensures even tamping and stable extraction.
The size refers to the inner diameter of the basket inside your portafilter.
1. Find your size in 30 seconds, the most reliable method
Remove the basket from the portafilter, or leave it in place.
Measure the inner diameter of the basket, where the coffee is tamped, using a ruler or measuring tool.
You will usually get: approximately 51 mm, 54 mm, or 58 mm.
Choice:
Measurement around 51 mm → choose 51 mm
Measurement around 54 mm → choose 54 mm, sometimes shown as 53.3 mm, which is normal
Measurement around 58 mm → choose 58 mm, sometimes shown as 58.4 / 58.5 mm depending on the model
2. I cannot measure: how can I know another way?
Option B — Check the basket, often the easiest method
On some baskets, the size is indicated, for example “51 mm”, “54 mm”, or “58 mm”, or shown through a manufacturer reference.
Option C — Check the manual or technical specifications
Look for “portafilter diameter” or “portafilter size”.
Option D — Quick tip without a manual
Search on Google: “filter basket [machine model] diameter” or “tamper size [machine model]”.
You can also check the size indicated on a compatible replacement basket.
3. Size examples by common machines
⚠️ Important: there may be exceptions depending on the version or year. If your model is not listed below, use the measuring method in section 1.
51 mm, very common
De’Longhi Dedica, EC680 / EC685 series: 51 mm
Several domestic De’Longhi machines also use 51 mm, but this should be confirmed by measurement if your model is different.
54 mm, Sage / Breville home standard
Sage / Breville Barista Express: 54 mm
Sage / Breville Bambino / Bambino Plus: 54 mm
Sage / Breville Barista Pro / Touch: 54 mm
58 mm, professional / E61 standard
E61 groups: 58 mm, including Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit E61, etc.
Gaggia Classic / Classic Pro: 58 mm
Rancilio Silvia: 58 mm
La Marzocco: 58 mm
4. 53.3 / 58.5: is this normal?
Yes. On some accessories, you may see:
53.3 mm → corresponds to 54 mm machines, with a more precise fit
58.5 mm → corresponds to 58 mm machines, with a more precise fit
On the store, you can simply display 54 mm and 58 mm, and specify in the description that it may be indicated as 53.3 / 58.5 depending on the model.
5. Tamper vs distributor vs station: is it the same size?
Tamper: must match the basket size, otherwise it can cause channeling and uneven tamping.
Distributor / Leveler: should be the same size to level the coffee grounds properly.
Tamping station: this is not based on the basket diameter, but on the indicated compatibility, for example “51–54 mm” or “58 mm”.
6. Still unsure? We will confirm it for you
Simply send us:
your exact machine model, for example “Sage Barista Express” or “De’Longhi EC685”,
or a photo of your basket with a small measurement.
